Shinnecock Hills Golf Club: This Month's Featured Course
Our
current Featured Project is the renovation work completed at
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club located
in Southampton, New York.
Shinnecock Hills will host the 104th U.S. Open (www.usopen.com)
in June 2004. The course is one of the most historic clubs in the United States and was a founding member of the USGA in 1894.
Since then the club has held seven USGA Championships, most recently the memorable 1995 US Open. The existing golf course has been
largely unchanged since William Flynn and Howard Toomey reworked the layout in the late twenties and early thirties.
McDonald & Sons was hired to respectfully add back tees on a number of holes and upgrade
the current practice facilities for membership play and the upcoming tournament.

McDonald & Sons worked hard along side Mark Michaud, Shinnecock Hills' Golf Course Superintendent and his staff to make these changes in early 2003.
The tees that were added to the course were an effort to counterbalance the technology and length of today's game and give the course more flexibility in setup.
After the additions by McDonald & Sons and a great deal of work by the golf course staff, the course
is ready to host the world's best golfers in what
is arguably the toughest golf tournament of the
year.
The
major tasks of this renovation project were:
Constructing new back tees on #3,4,7,8, and 17.
Upgrading the Practice Facilities
New Chipping and Putting Greens
The new chipping and putting greens were built to provide realistic practice and to accommodate more players at one time.
Utilizing the style and proportions of the course's historic greens we were able to create a short game area that reflects the types of shots seen on and around the greens on the course.
We were also able to salvage the sod off two existing putting greens thereby making the new surfaces consistent with the greens on the course.
New Driving Range Tee
Since the existing driving range tee was undersized we
increased its width and length to provide the membership and US Open competitors with more grass tee from which to hit.
The
2004 U.S. Open is sure to be an exciting and memorable event
and McDonald & Sons' work will play a significant
role in the championship. Our knowledge and commitment
to quality brought us to Shinnecock Hills, as well as many other Top
100 Courses.
