John "Chip" McDonald, President (Chip@McDonaldgolfinc.com)
Chip
started in the golf course construction business
in the early 1960's. He majored in Turf Management
at West Virginia University. After graduating
he became a Golf Course Superintendent for 15
years. A love of the work drew him back to construction
and in 1984 he founded McDonald & Sons, Inc. Chip
has built his reputation and the foundation of
his company on quality workmanship. Today McDonald
& Sons is regarded as one of the finest golf course
construction companies in the industry. Chip's
commitment to quality has garnished the company
projects on 16 of "America's 100 Greatest" golf
courses as ranked by Golf Digest in its 2007
rankings. Chip enjoys being surrounded by family
and friends and since the company's inception
in 1984, Chip has seen both of his sons join the
McDonald team as well as his wife and daughter
in-law. To this day there is not a project that
the company has done that Chip has not had his
hand in. This is the personal touch that sets
McDonald & Sons apart from the others.
Betty
McDonald, Secretary/Treasurer (Betty@mcdonaldgolfinc.com)
Betty has been Chip's partner in McDonald & Sons
since the company's inception. During the early
years she worked outside the golf business to
help support the family. Once the business was
established and successful, she retired from nursing
to assume the position of Office Manager. She
has used her experience in the corporate world
to mainstream the McDonald & Sons home office
in Jessup. Just like Chip, she has a hand in making
every project successful.
Erik
McDonald, Vice President (Erik@McDonaldgolfinc.com)
Erik
graduated with a Turf Degree from the University
of Maryland. Erik is one of the company's premier
shapers and lead project managers. On every project
he leads he pulls double duty as lead shaper and
project manager. Erik has the distinct, if not
enviable, task of traveling the country to work
on the company's more prestigious jobs. His travels
have taken him to New York for Bethpage
Black, Winged
Foot and Shinnecock
Hills; to Illinois for Olympia
Fields; and to California for Riviera
and Pelican
Hill.
John
A. McDonald II, Vice President (BigJohn@McDonaldgolfinc.com)
John
graduated from West Virginia University with a
degree in Psychology. After graduation John came
to work with his father and brother as a project
manager but his position evolved into the company's
Operations Manager. He facilitates the equipment
and materials on the company's projects as well
as manages all employee relations. John also handles
the company's ever-growing fleet of equipment
and vehicles. With jobs across the country, logistics
is now a large part of his efforts. Moving a workforce,
equipment, and acquiring housing for projects
around the country requires a continual effort.
John is assisted by his Mom, Betty and his wife,
Mary Robyn.
Mary
Robyn McDonald, Admin Asst (MRMcDonald@McDonaldgolfinc.com)
Mary
graduated from Salisbury State University with
a degree in English. She is a very organized person
which is a useful attribute in a company that
does 20-30 projects a year with up to 100 employees.
When not working on her own tasks, Mary helps
out with all aspects of the company's front office
operations. Mary is married to Chip's oldest son
John II and together they have a son, John III
who comes to the office to "work". Mary also helps
her husband with all of his duties, and together
they make a formidable team.
Ted
Nelson, Senior Project Manager (tedrtnelson@aol.com)
Ted
came to McDonald & Sons as a seasoned golf
course construction project manager. He rose to
the top as the company's head project manager
with his overall knowledge of golf construction
and his attention to detail and quality. In this
business it pays to be computer savvy and Ted
is the company's computer guru. In addition to
running his own projects, he sets up the computer
programs for other projects including schedules,
spreadsheets, tracking sheets and billings.
